MARTHA HALL WATER SYSTEM COMMISSIONED

Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing, Transport, Water and Works, Dr. Fenton Ferguson commissioned the Martha Hall Water System on January 24, 2007 at the Marlborough Primary School in St. Mary.

The newly upgraded Water System now provides a reliable water supply to customers in various communities. These include, Marlborough, Martha Hall, Hope Well, Bongo Town, Orange River and sections of Zion Hill. In Hope Well/Marlborough, an extension of the pipeline was done at a cost of approximately $1M and involved the running of 2,000 feet of 2 inch PVC pipelines. By virtue of this extension, some 36 households were able to enjoy the convenience of potable water.

In total, some 150 households are now being served by the Martha Hall Water System. The overall cost of the Project was approximately $5M. Work on the Project involved:

  • Extending the electricity supply by one kilometre to the pump house
  • Installing 20 Horse Power (HP) Vertical Pumping Unit
  • Installing 30 HP Toshiba Inverter
  • The laying of 1900feet of 4 inch Ductile Iron Pumping Main
  • Renovation of the existing Pump House
  • The building of a new chlorine house.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister Ferguson noted that the electrification of the Martha Hall Water Supply System was completed in September, 2006, to replace the defective diesel pump. He said that he was extremely pleased to be associated with the provision of water to the area as that could only result in a better standard of living for the community members. He commended members of both the National Water Commission and the Ministry of Housing, Transport, Water and Works for the part they played in the completion of the project

Also on hand to witness the commissioning of the Project were, MP for the area, Dr. Morais Guy, Mr. Lennon Richards who represented the Mayor of Port Maria, Bobby Montaque, the Principal and students of the Marlborough Primary School as well as the Dulcie Fullerton Basic School. Other community members who were in attendance hailed the provision of piped water to the various communities as a great initiative and pledged to maintain the System so that it would continue serving the communities for a long time to come.
