$1.4B CONTRACT SIGNED FOR BOGUE ROAD REHABILITATION

Dr. Alwin Hales, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Works; Mr. Leslie Chang, Surrey Paving and Aggregates; Minister Mike Henry; Hon. Clive Mullings, MP for the area; Mr. Noel Donaldson, Mayor of Montego Bay and Hon. Joseph Hibbert, Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Works.

The work which will be effected under Segment 1a of the North Coast Highway Improvement Project (NCHIP) will see the dualisation of the roadway between the Reading and Westgate communities. The scope of works involves improving the existing two lane highway to a four lane divided highway with improved intersection designs and significant drainage improvements. As part of the construction also, a bridge will be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge spanning the Montego River. The existing bridge is proposed to be rehabilitated and maintained to serve two lanes of traffic while a new bridge will be constructed to serve the other two lanes. The scope of works also allows for the procurement of traffic and street lights.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the western regional office of the Prime Minister, Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry said that the improvements would significantly assist with the congestion problems on that corridor of Montego Bay. He promised the people of Mobay that ‘before the start of the next tourist season …you’ll have your new roadway.’

Also speaking at the signing ceremony was Mr. Leslie Chang, CEO of Surrey Paving and Aggregate Ltd. who promised to make use of the night hours to do much of the work in order to leave the roadway free during peak traffic hours and ensure that the project will be completed within the one year completion deadline. The Surrey Paving CEO said that as a part of his company’s thrust to maintain its ISO 9000 certification (an international standard which speaks to quality work ), they would have to submit one of its projects to undergo an audit on an annual basis. Against that background, he said he would be submitting the Bogue Road Project for that assessment.

Also present and speaking at the ceremony was MP for the area, Hon. Clive Mullings who said he was happy that the project was about to get off the ground. He thanked the Jamaica Public Service for their contribution in moving the train lines by Bogue to facilitate the project.

Central to project will be the identification of alternative routes and other temporary measures to facilitate easy movement of traffic during the construction period.

Meanwhile, plans are to come on stream to establish a formal system of traffic for Montego Bay. The system will see the introduction of colour codes among other measures to facilitate better traffic management.
