TOLL ROAD GETS NEW PATROL CARS

Two new patrol cars were handed over to the Police Traffic Division courtesy of the National Road Operating and Constructing Company (NROCC). Chairman of NROCC, Mr. Christopher Bovell made the presentation to Deputy Superintendent of Police Claude Reynolds representing the Police Traffic Division. NROCC represents the government's interest in the operation of the island's toll road network.

The new patrol cars will be for dedicated use on the toll roads. The sourcing and outfitting of the units were done at the instrumentality of Transport Minister, Hon. Mike Henry after he viewed the scene of a dramatic two-vehicle accident which resulted in six fatalities near the Vineyard Toll Plaza in St. Catherine in September of last year.

The new patrol vehicles, in conjunction with at least one other patrol unit on the toll highway, is geared at reducing excessive speeding along the corridor. Last year there were some 346 fatalities on the nation's roads and many organisations including the Ministry's Road Safety Unit have been increasing their efforts in the reduction of the carnage on the roads. In this respect, the Unit has been spearheading a 'Drive For Life' campaign which is encouraging drivers to take the necessary precautions while driving on the roads.

The presentation took place at the Hilton Hotel on Friday, January 11.
