WORK PROCEEDING ON MARCUS GARVEY DRIVE/SPANISH TOWN ROAD

Work taking place on Marcus Garvey Drive.
Phase Two of work on the Marcus Garvey Drive is proceeding apace. On Friday when the JIS TV interviewed Works Minister Mike Henry and Managing Director of NROCC, Mr. Ivan Anderson at the work site, much activity was taking place. In conjunction with the works, major patching also took place along the Spanish Town Road.
On completion of the work along the Marcus Garvey Drive, sections of the road will have six lanes. Road widening is also taking place along the Three Miles to Spanish Town Road section of Spanish Town Road.
As a result of the work, traffic changes are now in effect along Marcus Garvey Drive. No vehicles will be permitted to enter 9th Avenue from Marcus Garvey Drive (ie - no left turns will be allowed). Traffic exiting 9th Avenue will only be permitted to turn left on to Marcus Garvey Drive.
Alternative routes area s follows: Motorists wishing to access the Newport West complex should turn right on 4th Avenue. Two lanes will be provided on Marcus Garvey Drive to accommodate this movement. Motorists exiting the Newport West complex and traveling towards East Avenue or Downtown Kingston should turn right from 4th Avenue on to Marcus Garvey Drive. Changes will be in effect until August, 2008 when the work is scheduled for completion.
Speaking at a tour of the works, Minister Mike Henry said that the widening of the road has become necessary because of the bottleneck which now exists when traffic exits the Portmore Toll Road. He noted that the work is to be seen in the wider context of overall road development and maintenance and that on completion it would enhance the multimodal approach to transport and works development. He apologized for the inconvenience that motorists and pedestrians are likely to face while the work is being undertaken but highlighted the fact that the work is necessary for the ultimate good of all.
Also on the tour were Managing Director of NROCC, Mr. Ivan Anderson and other officials from the Ministry of Transport and Works.
The work is being undertaken by NROCC and Bougyues.
